Not again ...

By CCP Red Button

I wasn't on duty but I'm gonna try and update you on what is and was happening. At approximately two o'clock today one of two critical switches on the backbone network in front of the database failed. This shut the cluster down to half capacity and cut the connection customer support has to the cluster.

The Eve cluster

By CCP Red Button

When reading the forums I have seen many speculations on the cluster setup. This has ranged from "THE" Eve server meaning one monstrous machine to a geographically dispersed spiderweb of proxies around a central cluster. Both extremes are far of although the latter one was considered at one point but later abandoned due to the inconvenience and minimal gains involved. In reality Eve is running on a cluster in Thamesside London.

Non dos related disconnects

By CCP Red Button

Just wanted to let all of you know that there have been a few cases lately of disconnects affecting a large number of users simultaineously. One happened just now at 17:40. We don´t know the cause yet but we are investigating several possibilites. I´ll let you know once we find out.

When it rains it pours

By CCP Red Button

Well, in the spirit of sharing information freely I´ll let you in on what happened tonight although it´s almost too embarrasing to reveal. When debugging the network issues last week (the dos attack), we did several things, including accidentally introducing a routing loop. The gateway router in front of the cluster also has an STM-1 and a satelite connection to Iceland and the loop went undetected until tonight when there was traffic to the subnet in question and the traffic volume started to b...

The db hiccup last night ...

By CCP Red Button

Was my fault. After spending a good deal of time yesterday setting up replication of the DB for added data security I foolishly started initial replication of the live DB in my eagerness to see it work. Irresponsible and rash, and the resulting cluster crash was totally avoidable. Therefore I offer this place for you to flame at will.

The ddos attack on Tuesday

By CCP Red Button

Well, it was a distributed denial of service (ddos) attack but perhaps not of the type we would have expected. That is to say it was not a malicious griefer with a ping script. The week before last we had been troubled by a high stuck rate and numerous user crashes to desktop. Most of them were traced to db performance issues or code bugs.

Reason for the connection drops today

By CCP Red Button

Hi all! First post here. I am an admin on the Eve cluster. Thought you would be interrested to know why users kept getting dropped at intervals today. Our sql server backups were failing since late yesterday. The db is on a schedule where a full backup is done once per day and transaction log backups in between.

New TQ Backup restored to the Test server

By CCP Hellmar

We have been tuning the process that takes care of this, as we were forced to due to increased datafile size. We will do a new port early next week (this backup is already a week old), which should require much less manual intervention than this port needed.

The Finns get it

By CCP Hellmar

Peliversumi gives us 98% The gist of it: """ Quite probably the best game of the year. Truly massive online science fiction game that has a believable universe with intriguing backround story. EVE´s graphics, and more spefically its arcitehcture in ships, space stations and characters is original, daring and most of all: eerily beautiful.

Anchoring of secure containers

By CCP Hellmar

We have been, for sometime now working on various player owned items in space. These are things like: Mobile refineries, Sentry Guns, Warp Disruptors, Force Field Emitters, Field Assembly Arrays, Docking Bays, etc. To cover deployment, overtaking, destruction and undeployment we have added a new state to all items, anchored.

Did you know...

..that if you put two cups of water in the freezer. One at 90°C and one at 18°C, the 90°C one will freeze faster?

Extended downtime due to patching

By CCP Hellmar

We discovered a problem with the caching of runtime generated PIL and D3D renderings just before we released the 1162 patch. It was a fix it an obscure problem with WinXP and memory mapped files that cause the error. In the recant of that fix we fumbled and the recanted version contained a CTD which made 1163 and 1164 short lived and until we had 1165 we couldn't start the servers. I offer my apologies and this place for you to vent your frustration with the extension or the patch itself. P.s.

Blaster Worm

By CCP Hellmar

Have gotten some reports about players blaming EVE for rebooting their system. Some cases involve the Blaster Worm. There have been bonefide cases of EVE rebooting system, through fragile video drivers, we have jumped around most of these cases in 1162.

Player blog

By CCP Hellmar

Would any one be interested in writing a player blog? It would be a place were players would write about their day to day life in EVE for others to read and comment on. It would be hosted here at the player web site in a similar way as the dev blog. I realise that some live more secret lives than others but I just wanted to know if any one would be interested doing it. If anyone is already doing it, I would be interested in a link to it…
