Black Eagles investigation reveal crimes of Jolee Hanvyner and wife

Originally reported by ISD Vance Siterman

Renyn - SDII Director Mentas Blaque and members of his senior staff held a news conference today, revealing that singer-songwriter Jolee Hanvyner and wife Federation marine officer Ting Hanvyner were arrested for treason and feeding classified military intelligence to the Caldari Navy.

According to Director Blaque's presentation, the fluid routers at the Ethernity mega-arena had been configured to feed directly into military FTL sub-networks under the control of Ting Hanvyner, a marine cyberwarfare officer. By changing the key of her songs and varying the lyrics, Jolee Hanvyner was able transmit melodic patterns as a musical code that would be decrypted by the Caldari Navy. There were no other accomplices, Blaque revealing the duo have been acting on their own.

In a prerecorded statement, Jolee Hanvyner was permitted a brief message. Her statement was subdued and revealed no details regarding the accusations.

"I apologize for what has happened, my friends, and wish I could compensate those who were caught up in the terrible events in Ethernity."

Closing the conference and taking no questions, Director Mentas Blaque took the floor.

"Throughout the Federation's history, there have been many cases of cultural icons believing themselves to stand above the laws that uphold the integrity of this union and the safety of our citizens. Jolee Hanvyner is just another in a long line of traitors who feel that the rules do not apply to them. No matter our prestige, no matter our standing, we are all Federation citizens and subject to the laws we consented to. I expect all of us to remember that."

Both women are expected to stand before a Supreme Court special tribunal, with top lawyers from across the Federation as attorney for both sides. The trial may last for many months, as it is reported the FIO are attempting to acquire evidence that the Ethernity incident was not an isolated case.

Alarming holoreel from mutinous Federation ground company shows execution of Black Eagle troopers

Originally reported by ISD Vance Siterman

Villore - The Senate Defense Committee has confirmed the existence of a holoreel circulating GalNet depicting Federation soldiers executing Black Eagle troopers who were sent to confiscate shipments of the booster Talon. Several GalNet service providers attempted to block access to the holoreel due to its extreme content, but were unable to prevent its distribution across several worlds.

The reel shows Federation marines standing guard over a group of unmasked Black Eagle soldiers, injured and on their knees with their hands tied. A non-gendered officer in full dress uniform appears, speaking to the camera as it pans around what appears to be a dimly-lit prefab shelter.

"The will of the government is only as strong as the will of its peoples. Our role as soldiers of the Federation is to protect our citizens from the excesses of the enemy, but it has become alarmingly clear that the enemy of the people is now its own government. We will not tolerate the existence of a force that seeks to undermine the democracy that we soldiers stand to uphold. This is a message to the weak-willed politicians of the Senate, all of whom have allowed the iron fist of Roden and Blaque's Federation to subdue the free worlds that we fight to defend."

Following the speech, each of the Black Eagle soldiers are executed at point blank range with a single shot to the head, before the feed cuts out. None of the Federation marines in the holoreel appear to be exhibiting the symptoms associated with use of Talon. The location where the holoreel was recorded is unknown. Questions have been raised as to how the regular soldiers were able to subdue the highly-trained Black Eagles.

No other Federation military or government channels appear to be commenting on the issue, beyond an automatic response stating that the matter is under immediate investigation. No information is available regarding the current status of military personnel deployed in the war zone and it is similarly unclear if this is an isolated incident.

Evaulon VII hosts finals of controversial "orbital strike" tournament

Evaulon - The battered planet of Evaulon VII played host to the finals of the Imperfects-run mercenary tournament which recently was blasted by the Intaki Assembly for the ecological damage caused following an event being held on Intaki Prime. As opposed to the Intaki, the government of Evaulon VII was fully in support of the event and claimed it provided them "a much needed economic boost."

According to tournament organizer Kain Spero, he was contacted by the government of Evaulon VII shortly after news broke about the Assembly's displeasure. "They were very willing to work with us to host the tournament. It was a no-lose scenario. After all, you can't really damage what's already been destroyed, right?"

Spero was referring to the city of Rilnais, which late last year was destroyed by a massive bombardment by the Serpentis. While the ruins of the city did not play host to the event itself, several of the defensive fortifications surrounding the city, which were abandoned following the Serpentis attack and city's destruction, were made available to participants.

A representative for the planetary government explained their willingness to host the tournament, "The event brought in hundreds of individuals to the nearby habitations to participate. And with the news from the previous round, a lot of people were eager to come by and spectate from a safe distance. After the destruction of Rilnais, we're eager for any injections of ISK."

The tournament was apparently a large success, as mercenary corporations belonging to the Rise of Legion and Unclaimed alliances did battle, while a massive 300-ship capsuleer fleet did battle in orbit as Rise of Legion managed to get off a single orbital strike before being pushed off the field by Unclaimed. The strike was seemingly enough to affect the battle, as their corporation took the victory and won the tournament.

Intaki Assembly condemns "orbital strike tournament"

Intaki - The Intaki Assembly has harshly condemned the Imperfects mercenary corporation for organizing a combat tournament on Intaki Prime which featured capsuleers providing off-field support via orbital strikes. The tournament, which involved mercenary corporations from across the cluster, was characterized by the Assembly as "an illegal bloodsport which caused untold damage to the planetary biosphere."

According to information gleaned from satellite reports, survey probes, and official releases from the organizers, the tournament took place amidst military installations recently abandoned by Mordu's Legion and the Ishukone Watch after the revocation of the Blind Auction by Tibus Heth. The mercenary corporations involved battled over the objectives on the planet, while capsuleers, who had been encouraged to place bets on the matches, were allowed to assault the facilities from orbit. Over the course of the tournament, numerous orbital strikes were recorded, and satellite images show several of the facilities have been reduced to rubble.

The majority of the installations were far from habited areas, typically being placed in arid regions of the planet without much surrounding wildlife. The Intaki Assembly claims this is irrelevant. "Orbital strikes, even tactical ones on remote sites, can kick up dust and spread pollution and wreckage," the press release read. "It is unconscionable that someone thought these activities were acceptable for entertainment and profit. That doesn't even consider the fact that it was essentially killing for fun. The Intaki Assembly would have never sanctioned such an event."

Tournament organizer Kane Spero brushed off such criticism, saying, "If anything, they should be thanking us for providing free demolition of those abandoned bases. If not for us, who knows? Kids might have gotten into them. Besides, it's not like anyone was permanently injured."

Musician Jolee Hanvyner detained by Black Eagles after spectacular concert raid

Originally reported by ISD Vance Siterman

Ethernity - The Black Eagles have released a public statement declaring their detention of famous singer-songwriter Jolee Hanvyner for "conspiracy and collaboration", after launching a large-scale raid of an orbital mega-arena around Ethernity VII last week.

During the raid, the thousands of concertgoers were flushed out by countless Black Eagle soldiers. No deaths and only minor injuries were reported, as the mega-arena's safety protocols kicked in, which prevented crushing through stampeding. The SDII reportedly used only less-than-lethal weaponry in what many are calling a "spectacular and completely over-the-top raid".

According to the statement, Hanvyner has been in Black Eagles' custody since the raid and is being kept for questioning in relation to the charges. What evidence the Eagles have for the conspiracy and collaboration, as well as details of who she was supposedly involved with, have yet to be released. Questions directed to the Black Eagles about these ommissions from the release have yet to be answered.

Teenage hackers arrested for altering space colony's atmosphere with crystal egg variant

Originally reported by ISD Vance Siterman

Unel - A teenage hacker duo have been arrested by local police for altering the atmosphere of urban-tropical space colony Enact's Eight with a variant of crystal egg, a popular feel-good booster. The case was thrown to the media foreground after being labeled by several channels as one of the most bizarre stories this year.

The teenagers, who can not be named for legal reasons, were able to disable the drone security systems protecting the flora responsible for breathable air generation. It is believed they injected large quantities of a liquified variant of crystal egg into irrigated soil, and hacked into life support monitoring to prevent any atmospheric imbalances from being detected. Within an hour, thousands of citizens across the colony started exhibiting the symptoms associated with crystal egg use. Several infants were briefly hospitalized by the incident, but no deaths or severe reactions were reported.

Public testimonies from the teenagers reveal that the duo were attempting to "relieve the tensions" felt amongst Enact's Eight given their proximity to the Caldari border. Although infrequent border raids by State forces have not touched Enact's Eight, there is still significant unease amongst the colony. Nonetheless, both individuals were arrested and tried for sabotage. The pair were briefly detained by the FIO's Black Eagles after rumors circulated about possible Caldari involvement, but were released after only a few hours following a popular backlash over GalNet.

In terms of the actual effects on the citizens of the colony, it is known that vehicle traffic slowed down once the narcotic had entered the air supply, but no accidents were reported. Many of the citizens appreciated the gesture.

"All things considered, it was actually quite nice," said one citizen, "I decided to head to the beach, where everyone was far more sociable than usual. Things were a bit hazy, but overall, I think most of us appreciated being able to feel languid for a few hours."

There is an unconfirmed rumor that citizens considered not pressing charges against the duo due to being under the influence of the narcotic. The colony's governor, however, took the matter far more seriously.

"Luckily for the perpetrators, no individual was killed from their irresponsible and malicious act. This is frankly an embarrassment for Enact's Eight, and I expect all of us to ensure that our society does not encourage such reckless behavior in future."

The trial is currently underway. It is expected both teenagers will be sentenced to three years of compulsory education in addition to their current commitment, a common form of youth criminal rehabilitation in the Federation. It is reported that the colony are negotiating with Chemal Tech for upgrading their electronic security infrastructure.

Federation Supreme to debate what it means to be Minmatar

Originally reported by ISD Marela Nadirones

Parts - This week, the Federation Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Odenjorn vs. Center of Advanced Studies, a case that questions the interpretation and consideration of race in university administrative practices.

This is the first in what many court observers believe may be a number of challenges to Rislander vs. University of Caille. This landmark YC105 case is best known for affirming that the Minmatar assistance laws put in place during the Minmatar Rebellion apply to modern immigrants. It is also responsible for codifying the current race-blind Federation definition of "Minmatar".

Saerkidi Odenjorn, a Brutor immigrant, is charging that the Federation's considering all those of Minmatar origin as one race facilitates rampant discrimination by CAS's Office of Minority Affairs. Her suit alleges that CAS's Minority Affairs officers, all Sebiestor, exclusively favor Sebiestor applicants for Minmatar-reserved technical scholarship offerings, internship programs and undergraduate research.

Ms. Odenjorn, a neuroelectrical systems engineer, graduated first in her class of 430,000, an academic feat achieved despite working two sanitation custodian jobs. She is currently unable to find work in her chosen field, a situation she attributes to having been "shut out" of the opportunities afforded Minmatar engineering and technical science students at CAS. "At one point," she told reporters at a recent media briefing, "I was advised to 'go change your major to communications, public policy, or Minmatar Studies'. No offense meant to you, my counsel, or academicians like the esteemed Professor Sighruss, but I don't want to give press conferences for a living."

While the Center of Advanced Studies has issued no formal statement concerning the case, its Office of Minority Affairs personnel have not been silent.

"Ms. Odenjorn is deliberately making a wormhole out of a statistical anomaly," Senior Minority Affairs Officer Andrur Hlaegil told viewers of last night's Scope Legal Day. "And why? It suits her personal agenda; the belief that minority uplift programs should be open solely to the academic elite. We at CAS disagree. While we value brilliant, independent thinkers - some of our graduates have designed things that have changed the face of the cluster - we also look at other factors when determining who to admit to our programs."

When asked about the particular reasons for Ms. Odenjorn's not being awarded financial assistance or other opportunities during her time at CAS, Dr. Hlaegil replied, "I don't know. Maybe she isn't a team player."

Algogille - Leaked reports from Federation military personnel bureaus have cropped up regarding a new booster called ‘Talon' which has been circulating amongst ground battalions.

Talon reportedly enhances physical performance and aggression at the cost of cognitive function and has a high addiction rate. Federation company commanders across Black Rise and Placid have been lured into purchasing the drug for their units in the face of high rates of low morale and desertion, with Talon reducing fear and hesitation amongst soldiers. However, this has come at the cost of increased violence against local Caldari civilians, something that President Roden is reportedly "very concerned" about.

Reports show that Federal military recruiters are failing to properly reject large volumes of recruits who fail to meet the high moral and character standards required of Gallente soldiers. Criminal records, previously an automatic disqualification from eligibility, are being overlooked due to personnel requirements being at an all-time high. As a result, many soldiers are failing to cope with the pressures of the frontline battlefield, forcing commanders to take extreme measures in maintaining unit cohesion and morale.

"This is a huge problem." said a military analyst with the Scope, "The current Federation administration under President Roden has been following the typical Gallente hearts-and-minds approach, especially with the Caldari exile communities found all across Black Rise. But if Federal soldiers are just as brutish as the Provists, how will these civilians be won over?"

Despite the potential gains in military effectiveness, Federation military command is expected to step in to curb proliferation of the drug.

Federal Defence Union to award Wings of Valor for complete territorial capture

Ostingele - President Jacus Roden today announced the commissioning and distribution of the Wings of Valor medal, to be presented to all the pilots who assisted the Federal Defence Union in fully capturing all territory contested between the Caldari State and Gallente Federation on January 12, YC115.

In a short speech delivered from the Federal Defence Union HQ, President Roden applauded the pilots who delivered the historic victory. "The pride of those loyal to the Federation is a testament to our unfailing beliefs. Just over three years ago, the morale of the Federal Defence Union was at its lowest point. The Caldari had overrun our forces and had a stranglehold on the contested systems of Placid, Verge Vendor, and Essence. Many believed the Federation would break. Many believed we would crumble and fall away.

"But we persevered! The Gallente people looked at those who led it and said, 'We cannot abide!' And they swept away the old. Those who had remained loyal to the ideals of the Federation remained steadfast and stood strong. Within a week, we had recaptured systems! Eventually, we broke the Caldari.

"The fires of liberty have made their inexorable march, led by the brave men and women of the Federal Defence Union. It is your triumphs which show justice and equality shall forever reign supreme. Today the Gallente Federation presents you with the Wings of Valor."

The medal is being awarded to all those who aided in the battle for contested space on behalf of the Federal Defence Union between December 12 and the January 12 Ladistier capture date.

Despite the subsequent loss of several systems back to the Caldari, Federal Defence Union capsuleer liason Allisa Audere expressed confidence that those systems "will soon be recaptured by our forces."

Journalist's body recovered in aftermath of attack

The Scope journalist, finally identified as junior reporter Marice Lemant, who had been held by the Caldari Providence Directorate for recording and distributing holoreels depicting the torture and murder of Caldari citizens has been found dead in the rubble of a Provist facility in Ladistier. The facility was captured by Federal Defence Union ground forces earlier this week, though both it and the Federation Navy are denying responsibility for its destruction.

According to the Federal Defence Union, ground forces came across the facility soon after ground fighting began, being defended by a small band of stragglers from the Provists. However, the majority of the facility had already been destroyed and M. Lemant had been dead for several hours. An autopsy performed by an FDU coroner confirmed that he was killed by a sustained burst of small arms fire consistent with weaponry used by some elite Caldari commando forces, as were many of the Provist bodies recovered from the site.

Both the Caldari Providence Directorate, State Protectorate, and Caldari Navy have refused to comment on the matter aside from expressing regret at Mr. Lemant's death. They have described all other matters relating to the incidents as "internal security issues".

M. Lemant's body is being returned to his family in Luminaire. The Scope wishes to extend its sympathy to the family, while also denouncing his involvement with the "Mort Media" series of snuff reels.

Detained Journalist has ''Actionable Intelligence''

The journalist being detained by the Caldari Providence Directorate has apparently been supplying "actionable intelligence" to the Caldari State, according to a leaked report from the Caldari Navy. The contents of the report have renewed calls for the journalist to be handed over to Federal authorities, which the State has repeatedly denied.

"The man is being held illegally," claimed a representative from the Federal Administration. "He is not a combatant, yet is being held without charges in a Navy detention cell, where he is likely being subject to torture and other immoral interrogation techniques."

The Caldari Navy, however, has refuted the illegality of his detainment, claiming the violent holoreels he was releasing violated Caldari law. Additionally, the Navy has claimed, "No information received from the individual in question has been utilized in anti-Federation operations. He is providing valuable intelligence to eliminate subversive elements within the State."

The Federation has appealed to CONCORD to intervene and force the State's hand, but so far the Inner Circle has failed to publicly acknowledge the incident.

Detained Journalist Linked to Violent Holoreels

A journalist working for the Scope has been detained by Caldari Providence Directorate forces after being captured following ground fighting in an occupied system. While civilian prisoners have been released after a short time in the past, the journalist, whose name is being withheld both by the Scope and Provists, is reportedly being indefinitely detained to allow for investigation into allegations that he was involved in the recording and distribution of illicit holoreels over recent months.

According to information delivered to the Scope, the journalist is supposedly behind the "Mort Media" holoreels, distributed by the Black Velvet label. These holoreels have graphically depicted the torture and execution of POWs and have been presented as entertainment. As ground fighting has spread across New Eden, the appetite for these holoreels, particularly among the Gallente Federation, has seen a sharp increase, with the Black Velvet label providing a significant portion.

The journalist in question has been linked to the holoreel known as "1 LAV, 14 MIA", where three unidentified men in a Caldari Light Attack Vehicle are filmed as they run down a mix of enemy combatants and civilians, laughing as they do so.

The Federal Administration has demanded the journalist be released into Federal custody, but the Provists have so far refused. A statement from the Provists said, "The Gallente have already failed to act in bringing those responsible for this reprehensible material to justice. The fact that they're claiming jurisdiction now, and worse taking a moral high-ground, is laughable. It's no surprise to us that hateful material like this, taking pleasure in the gruesome death of our countrymen, hasn't been denounced in Federal territories until now. We'll conduct this investigation, and we'll hand this man over when there's no room for further tardiness and inaction."

While the various arms of the Federal military have all committed themselves to internal investigations regarding the conduct seen in the reels, authorities are already indicating that responsibility for the acts being filmed lies elsewhere.

Aftermath of Nation attacks ''eerie'' and ''disturbing''

Ation - Nearly 750.000 Federation citizens were abducted from the Ation system by Sansha's Nation in a recent raid. Much like in previous raids the Nation left the attacked sites nearly devoid of human life, carrying off everyone from the newly born to the elderly.

Estigone, a settlement of nearly 200.000, was one of the main sites of the Sansha attack. Before the attack it was a bustling industrial community in growth, centered around several factories belonging to Aliastra. Now it lies deserted, with nearly every one of its citizens taken during the Nation raid.

Across the settlement, evidence of its previous inhabitants is easy to come by. Half-eaten dinners sit rotting on tables. Holoplayers loop their reels unceasingly. Computer screens display incomplete messages. Unfiled reports sit on office desks. Family pets claw at cages and gnaw at restraints.

Perhaps most baffling is the lack of evidence for any resistance. Though Estigone had an organized and armed police force, there is little indication that they mustered any opposition to the Nation's raiders. Weapons remain unfired in their lockers, the safeties still on. While there are some small signs of conflict, such as blaster holes and scattered debris from small explosions, much of the city is undamaged.

"It's almost as if everyone just got up and peacefully walked into the Sansha dropships," said Therion Niemann, a representative of the Sisters of EVE who was dispatched to search for survivors. "I've seen some disturbing battle sites before, but nothing has been quite so eerie as this."
